Inclusive Teacher: My Little Worry Book

Emotional Regulation.

We are working increasingly hard on supporting our pupils with emotions and emotional regulation. It is essential that we try to find ways to help children identify how they feel and what they can do if they feel anxious, upset or afraid. In special education the needs of the children vary so much that it is unlikely that any bought resources will meet the needs. Special education teachers are adept at adapting resources. I wanted to share a quick little resource I made for a girl in my class who was displaying a range of “challenging behaviour” driven by high levels of anxiety.

A little book of emotions.

I needed something quick and simple to support a young student through a difficult time. Anxiety and worry really effected her and was a barrier to her accessing the wider school environment. She was very reliant on staff to support her with very little idea of the ways she could help herself without getting overwhelmed. Her actions suggested she needed some prompts to think of ways to ask for help. By making this little book and supporting the use of it with emotions work we were able to provide a way for her to talk through her worries.

If you want to make you own version the editable .ipdoc file is downloadable here  (open with widgit softwares InPrint 3)

All it takes is a bit of folding and cutting out the emotions and strategies and you are good to go. I just folded and taped all the emotions so they can be flipped over and matched to a calming strategy. The PDF version is downloadable using the link below.

Great books about feelings/emotions and Anxiety.

The following books are great to boost your classroom resources around teaching and discussing emotions and the causes of anxiety. I don’t like to get hung up on age appropriateness. If the book is accessible and going to be useful to the young person then use it.

How are you feeling today book.jpg

How are you feeling today is a book I have used in class to start discussions about feelings and linked to our emotion work. Quite a lot of information on each page but you can take the key elements.

The colour monster is a great pop up book that links colours and feelings. This is my daughters favourite book and can be used as a way to open up further discussion about situations that make you feel certain ways.
