Sensory Learning Activities for Moses and the Burning Bush:
- “Burning Bush” Light & Warmth Play:
- Activity: In a slightly darkened room, use a red/orange scarf or fabric draped over a small, clear container with a warm-colored LED light or flashlight inside (ensure it’s safe and won’t overheat). Allow learners to observe the flickering light. Offer a warm pack to touch, contrasting it with a cool pack to represent the paradox of the burning but not consumed bush.
- Sensory Focus: Sight (light, colour, flickering), Touch (warmth, coolness).
- “Holy Ground” Foot Exploration:
- Activity: Prepare a shallow tray or box with a small amount of soft carpet or a plush blanket. Next to it, have a contrasting cool mat (perhaps chilled slightly). Guide learners to remove their shoes and gently place their feet on the different textures, emphasizing “holy ground” when on the soft carpet. Add a very gentle vibration from a small vibrating cushion under the soft mat.
- Sensory Focus: Touch (soft, cool, warmth, vibration), Proprioception (pressure on feet).
- “God’s Voice” Soundscape:
- Activity: Use a variety of vocalizations – a whispering voice for “God said,” then a louder, clear, yet gentle “bell sound” for His presence. Introduce a low, deep rumble (from a drum or vibrating object) for the mountain’s presence. Guide the learner to feel the vibrations while hearing the sounds.

- “Desert & Freedom” Contrast Exploration:
- Activity: Create two distinct zones: a “desert” area with rough sandpaper or dry, coarse fabric, and a “freedom” area with smooth, cool fabric or flowing silk. Guide learners to move from the rough desert feeling to the smooth freedom feeling. Play slightly anxious, wandering music for the desert and joyful, expansive music for freedom.

- “Fiery Tree” Aroma & Sight:
- Activity: Introduce a safe, subtle “earthy” or “scorched” scent (e.g., a drop of vetiver essential oil on a cotton pad, or a tiny amount of real, safe charcoal dust on a sealed pad – with extreme caution) as you talk about the burning bush. Present red and orange fabric or streamers that can be waved, creating dynamic visual movement.
