Educators frequently report high workloads and a lack of work-life balance, with administrative tasks, lesson planning, and marking consuming a large portion of their non-teaching time. AI tools offer a compelling solution, capable of drafting curriculum plans, producing high-quality teaching resources, and speeding up marking processes. Some developers estimate these tools could reduce time spent on formative assessment by up to 50%, freeing up valuable teacher time to concentrate on inspiring students and delivering high-quality face-to-face teaching. This reduction in administrative load could also play a crucial role in addressing the ongoing recruitment and retention challenges within the teaching profession, making it a more attractive and sustainable career.  

Beyond administrative relief, AI offers transformative potential for learning itself. It can help teachers understand each student’s progress more effectively, allowing for teaching to be precisely tailored to individual learning needs. This capacity for personalised learning is a significant advantage, as AI can adapt content and feedback to suit individual requirements. This adaptability is particularly relevant for creating truly inclusive classrooms.  

AI and Neurodiversity-Affirming Practices: Supporting Every Learner

A core principle of inclusive education is that all children learn together in mainstream classrooms for the majority of their day, with positive effects on student achievement and social wellbeing for everyone. AI’s ability to personalise learning experiences aligns perfectly with this neurodiversity-affirming perspective.  

For students with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), for example, AI-powered tools could assist in creating structured routines, providing timely reminders, and offering frequent, tailored “brain breaks” that help reset focus. AI could also facilitate multisensory learning by generating diverse content formats, such as visuals, hands-on activity ideas, or interactive simulations, which can be highly engaging for students who may struggle with passive learning. Furthermore, AI could support the development of self-regulation strategies by providing tools for students to monitor their own focus, use timers, or work through checklists, helping them build metacognitive skills.  

Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) are vital roadmaps outlining specific goals, support strategies, and accommodations for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN). AI could streamline the creation and monitoring of these plans, helping educators to write truly effective and individualised SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Bound) goals. AI could also assist in tracking progress towards these goals, identifying areas where additional support is needed, and suggesting appropriate interventions. For instance, an AI tool could analyse a student’s performance data and recommend specific teaching approaches or resources that align with their IEP, ensuring that specified provisions are implemented effectively in the classroom.  

For autistic students, who make up a significant portion of the SEN population in mainstream schools in England , AI could offer tailored support. Given that many autistic children report that school would be better if more teachers understood autism , AI could provide teachers with instant access to strategies for understanding autistic communication styles, creating sensory-friendly and predictable learning environments, and supporting social and emotional needs.   • Ethical Use of Data: Beyond security, there are ethical questions about how student data is used. Should AI systems be used to predict future academic success or behavioural issues? How can we ensure that such predictions do not lead to labelling or limiting a student’s potential? Safeguarding concerns also extend to the content generated by AI. Schools need policies to prevent AI from being used to create or disseminate inappropriate or harmful material.

Over-reliance on Technology and Human Connection

While AI can streamline tasks and personalise learning, there is a risk of over-reliance on technology, potentially diminishing the invaluable human connection in education. Teaching is fundamentally a human endeavour, built on relationships, empathy, and nuanced understanding that AI cannot replicate.  

  • Reduced Social Interaction: Excessive reliance on AI tools for instruction or feedback could reduce opportunities for direct teacher-student interaction, peer collaboration, and the development of crucial social skills.
  • Teacher Deskilling: If AI takes over too many core teaching functions, there is a concern that teachers might become less skilled in areas like lesson planning, creative resource creation, or even direct assessment, leading to a deskilling of the profession.

  • Connectivity and Devices: Despite government investment in enhancing digital connectivity in schools , disparities persist. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds may lack access to necessary technology at home, creating a gap in their ability to engage with AI-powered learning tools outside of school hours. This can exacerbate existing educational inequalities.  
  • Training and Digital Literacy: Teachers also need adequate training and digital literacy skills to effectively use AI tools. If professional development opportunities are not equitably distributed, some educators may be left behind, impacting their ability to provide inclusive AI-enhanced learning experiences.

  • Ethical Use: CPD must address the ethical considerations of AI, such as bias, data privacy, and safeguarding. Teachers need guidance on identifying and mitigating potential harms, ensuring responsible AI use in their classrooms.
  • Inclusive Application: Training should specifically focus on how AI can support diverse learning needs, including those of neurodivergent students. This involves exploring AI tools that offer personalisation, adaptive learning, and accessibility features, and understanding how to integrate them into inclusive pedagogical practices. The success of programmes like the Early Career Framework (ECF) and National Professional Qualifications (NPQs), which are research-informed and include dedicated time for development and mentorship, indicates a strong demand for evidence-based teaching practices.   • Practical Application: Content and tools should not just be theoretically sound but also offer practical, actionable guidance that teachers can implement in their daily practice.
