There are some excellent lessons us educators can take from George RR Martin’s epic tale of the fight for the throne of Westeros. Friendship, struggle against adversary, loyalty to name just a few. Here are a selection of quotes that you may find apply to you or your students.
“Once you’ve accepted your flaws, no one can use them against you”
Schools can be very intense environments, your strengths and weaknesses are on display for all to see. Schools should be the best possible environment to develop within. Not all staff or students will be supportive of each other. So we must be. We must accept that which we cannot change and use it to our advantage. How boring would it be if we were all the same?

“A man who won’t listen can’t hear”
Well yes. We need to always be mindful of what our students are telling us, and not just verbally. In their appearance and demeanor. If we are not open to this we cannot effectively support our students through the challenges of growing up.

“Different roads sometimes lead to the same castle”
This could easily be a teacher’s mantra. This is why we differentiate. Education should be about the journey, the learning process and how we facilitate that for every student is what makes teaching more than a job.

“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you”
Labels, labels everywhere. Education today is full of them and most if we are honest seek to label a deficit. Where actually we should be embracing each individual’s strengths. Both in a teaching team and in our student population. Stand up, be proud of what you unique.

“A bruise is a lesson and each lesson makes us better”
I’m sure every teacher, trainee and NQT has been through the dreaded graded lesson observation. I’m sure some of these have not gone to plan. Every teacher needs a dash of resilience to thrive in what is a very stressful environment.

“A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge”
Many of the best Teachers see themselves as learners always looking to hone their craft. Our book reading doesn’t finish with a teaching certificate.

“When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives”
The strongest school leaders will develop a team mentality not create an atmosphere of competition. We work for the best outcomes for the children not individual empire building. Schools are at the whim of governments and the economy. Winter is coming.

“The man who fears losing has already lost”
Would anyone disagree that confidence in your abilities (or at least the appearance of confidence) is essential as a teacher?

“The great thing about reading is that it broadens your life.”
Another one for the English teachers. Think how much our job is about exposing our students to new experiences and the world outside your local community. Sure we could use Skype but there is something fulfilling about looking through the school library.

“Some people will always need help that doesn’t mean they’re not worth helping.”
We must have high expectations of all our students. ALL of our students.
